“the church” (former)

from black flag posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

This is the former location of "The Church," a Hermosa Beach hub for the West Coast's early punk rock scene. The former Baptist church was in disrepair in the late 70s when the owners began to rent it out to musicians and artists. Black Flag used it as a practice space and Ron Reyes lived in the church after he took over as Black Flag's frontman in 1979.

A steakhouse, complete with graffitied walls intended to honor the punk spirit of the former location, now occupies the spot where the church used to be.

from big l posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

The photo on the cover of Big L's 1995 debut Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous was taken on the corner of Lenox Avenue and West 139th Street in Harlem.

On the album Big L calls 139 and Lenox the "Danger Zone," which I guess it is. In 1999 he was shot and killed during a drive-by not even a block away when he was only 24.

where woodward met with ‘deep throat’

from watergate scandal posted in history by nevereatshreddedwheat

In late 1972 through 1973 Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward met six times with his source 'Deep Throat' at a parking garage (specifically spot 32D) at this location in Arlington, Virginia. With Deep Throat's information, President Nixon's role in the Watergate coverup was exposed which led to Nixon's resignation in 1974.

In 2005 it was revealed that Deep Throat was Mark Felt, the FBI's number two man at the time.

A historical marker marks the spot where they met. As of 2013 the garage is still standing, although there are rumors that it will soon be torn down.

bletchley park

from angelmaker, nick harkaway posted in literature by nevereatshreddedwheat

And yes, of course, Joe remembers Bletchley, with its mysterious Nissen huts in various stages of decay, surrounded by suspect little hills which were clearly anything but, and the sprawling red-brick house which had been home to the greatest mathematicians an embattled Britain could lay hands on.

Angelmaker, Nick Harkaway

The U.K.'s codebreakers cracked codes here during World War II. It's currently a museum.

latin quarter (former)

from the golden age of hip hop posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

This is the former Times Square location of the Latin Quarter. The nightclub dates back to 1942, but the few short years from '85 to '89 was when it earned its status as a legendary hip hop hotspot.

EPMD, the Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, X Clan and many others all got their start playing shows at the LQ during hip hop's golden age. MC Hammer was booed here during his first New York appearance, but then again even Public Enemy was told to get off the stage by Melle Mel when they played the LQ to promote Yo! Bum Rush the Show.

The Latin Quarter is mentioned in songs by PE, Ice T, BDP and 3rd Bass among others. The building was torn down in 1989. The club reopened in 2003 on the East Side, and that location is notorious for being the place where Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg.
