bar luce

from wes anderson posted in movies by nevereatshreddedwheat

Director Wes Anderson designed this cafè as part of the art complex Fondazione Prada that opened in Milan in May 2015. It showcases the familiar elements of his iconic style (bright colors, geometric furniture, probably some futura somewhere) along with two movie-themed pinball games, one for The Life Aquatic and another for his short film Castello Cavalcanti financed by Prada in 2013.

bed-stuy neighborhood block

from do the right thing, public enemy posted in movies by nevereatshreddedwheat

Both Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and the video for Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" that he directed were both filmed on Stuyvesant Avenue between Lexington and Quincy in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood. Sal's Pizzeria and the Korean grocery were both sets built for the movie.

The "Bed-Stuy Do or Die" mural that was painted for the movie on the corner of Stuyvesant and Lexington Avenues is almost entirely faded and mostly obstructed by a newer building.

"Fight the Power" was written by Public Enemy for the movie and was originally on the Do the Right Thing soundtrack.

the rockatorium

from rock ‘n’ roll high school, the ramones posted in movies by nevereatshreddedwheat

In 1979's Roger Corman B-movie Rock 'n' Roll High School, exteriors of the Rockatorium, where Riff camps out for tickets and the Ramones arrive in their pink Cadillac, were shot at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles. The Ramones concert itself was filmed at the Roxy Theatre on Sunset Strip in Hollywood.

The Mayan opened in 1927 and first showed live musicals, then movies, then in the 1940s it was a burlesque house, back to movies in the 1950s, was a porn theatre in the 1970s and is now a nightclub. You can also see the Mayan, inside and out, in The Bodyguard starring Kevin Costner.

vince lombardi high school

from rock ‘n’ roll high school, the ramones posted in movies by nevereatshreddedwheat

If you guessed that Vince Lombardi High School from the Roger Corman-produced Rock 'n' Roll High School was in Wisconsin, you would be wrong, since it doesn't exist. The movie was filmed at the Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles, an all boys Catholic high school that had been closed for several years by the time the movie came out in 1979. This is the former site of the school. I don't know if there is any truth to the rumors that the explosion at the end was part of the building's demolition. I believe the building was actually demolished around '82 or '83.

Todd Rundgren, Cheap Trick and Tom Petty were supposedly all considered for the movie before the Ramones got the part.

spruce goose dome

from batman forever, virtuosity posted in movies by nevereatshreddedwheat

The Spruce Goose Dome in Long Beach, CA was designed by Don Richter, a longtime associate of Buckminster Fuller, as a hangar for Howard Hughes' wooden aircraft the H-4 Hercules (a.k.a the "Spruce Goose"). Built in 1983, the dome is still one of the ten largest geodesic domes in the world.

The Spruce Goose was moved to a museum in Oregon in 1992. Warner Bros. now uses the dome as a sound stage. The Bat Cave in 1995's Batman Forever was built inside the dome. Other unforgettable classics filmed here include Virtuosity, Jack Frost and the remake of the Haunting.
