gaslight square

from miles davis, barbra streisand, lenny bruce posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

Gaslight Square was an entertainment district in St. Louis that thrived from the mid-1950s through the '60s. Over three dozen establishments in the area around Olive and Boyle Streets were home to the bohemian culture of the time. The area featured Dixieland jazz, ragtime and cabaret. Some of the legendary performers that made their way through Gaslight Square include Lenny Bruce, Woody Allen, The Smothers Brothers, George Carlin, Miles Davis and Barbra Streisand among others.

Someone told me about this when I lived in St. Louis ten years ago, and I had a hard time believing anything of the sort existed where at the time there were just decrepit, abandoned buildings and vacant lots. I think very little of the original architecture still exists, but development has picked up in the area and there are now condos and residential houses.

dome village

from beastie boys, spike jonze posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

Parts of Spike Jonze's video for "Sure Shot" by the Beastie Boys were filmed among the igloo-like domes of Dome Village in downtown Los Angeles.

Dome Village was founded in 1993 to provide non-traditional housing for homeless people. The fiberglass geodesic domes were designed by Craig Chamberlain, a former student of Buckminster Fuller. Each unit cost $10,000 and could house up to 34 tenants. The residents were evicted and the domes auctioned off in 2006 when the property owner raised the rent on the land where the domes were set up.

independence hall

Gene and Dean Ween try to steal the Liberty Bell from Independence Hall in Spike Jonze's video for "Freedom of '76."

FYI Mannequin was filmed at Philadelphia's Wanamaker's department store not Woolworth's. Apparently Ween knew this when they wrote the song, but Woolworth's sounded better.
