g-spot

from beastie boys posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

The Beastie Boys rented this house in Los Angeles while working on Paul's Boutique after their stint at the Mondrian Hotel. The G-Spot nickname came from the large gold "G" on the front of the building which presumably stood for the house's owner Marilyn Grasshoff. They would end up raiding her closet for the '70s clothes they wore in the video for "Hey Ladies."

The photo of the Beastie Boys underwater was shot by photographer Ricky Powell from Ad-Rock's underground guesthouse bedroom that featured a window into the swimming pool.

isla de encanta

from the pixies posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

Black Francis referred to Puerto Rico as "Isla de Encanta" in the song of that name, sung in Spanish about leaving the island, off the first Pixies EP Come On Pilgrim. The correct Spanish name is "Isla del Encanto" which translates to "Island of Enchantment." Charles Thompson (before he was Pixies frontman Black Francis) went to Puerto Rico as part of a six month exchange program after his stint at U-Mass. He was living in Puerto Rico when he sent Joey Santiago a letter about starting a band when he returned.

He would also draw on his experience there with a crazy roommate for the Doolittle song "Crackity Jones." The line "He got friends like Paco Picopiedra" was a reference to the voice of Fred Flintstone that roommate claimed to hear in his head, but once again Black Francis didn't quite get the Spanish right. Spanish speakers know Fred Flintstone as Pedro Picapeidra.

biggest ball of twine in minnesota

from weird al yankovic posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

It's billed as the "World's Largest Twine Ball," although since 1950 when Francis A. Johnson wrapped his twine ball in Darwin Minnesota there have been larger and heavier ones constructed in Kansas and Wisconsin. Also, Branson, Missouri supposedly has what is now the largest twine ball in the world, but of course Branson would have something like that. Let's just say the Midwest is amazing.

The twine ball in Darwin (pop: 350) that Weird Al is singing about in his song "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota" is under a gazebo in the center of town, and "Twine Ball Day" is held every year in Darwin on the second Saturday of August.
