Pioneering musician/hip-hop artist MCA (Adam Yauch) of the Beastie Boys died at New York-Presbyterian hospital on May 4, 2012. He was 47 years old.

Yauch was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland in 2009. An especially rare form of cancer, salivary gland cancer effects only 2 in 100,000 people. MCA was on the younger side of the spectrum of those afflicted by the illness.

The Beastie Boys had recently been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April. MCA's health prevented him from joining Mike D and Ad-Rock in accepting the award, but he sent a letter of gratitude. The Beastie Boys are only the third hip-hop act to be inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame (after Grandmaster Flash and Run-DMC).

MCA is survived by wife Dechen Wangdu and 13-year-old daughter Tenzin Losel.

R.I.P MCA/Adam Yauch, 1964-2012. You will be missed.

fine line music cafe

In January of 1993, Frank Black disbanded The Pixies, notifying guitarist Joey Santiago via a phone call, while sending a fax to bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering. At the time, The Pixies had enjoyed only moderate success in the US, while have a much larger following in Europe.

Since then, The Pixies have arguably become one of the most influential bands in the indie rock genre.

On April 13, 2004, after eleven years of hiatus, The Pixies played their first reunion show at the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis, MN. The successful show was the beginning of a series of shows that led to a national and international tour.

During this show, denizens of the city who couldn't get tickets to the sold-out show hung out in the alley to listen it. It was pretty cool.

The build-up to the reunion show and the subsequent tour is the subject of the 2006 documentary loudQUIETloud: A Film About The Pixies.

duffy’s (former)

In a building that was a former railroad worker's hotel, Duffy's was a punk rock club in the early 80's near this intersection. It had an outdoor volleyball court, basketball hoops, and decks for with outdoor seating. The stage was inside under a domed ceiling.

In 1983/84, Duffy's was converted into a new wave disco called Norma Jean's (with a Marilyn Monroe theme), and scaled back on booking bands.

On November 3, 1997, the building was demolished. View a vintage picture of Duffy's here.
