At 11:50 pm on April 16, 1960, Eddie Cochran was traveling on the A4 near Chippenham after a 13 week tour of the UK, when the speeding taxi blew a tire and crashed into a lamp post on Rowden Hill.
He was taken to St Martin’s Hospital and passed away the next day (April 17, 1960) of head injuries. A memorial stone is located in the old chapel grounds at St Martin’s Hospital. A memorial plaque can also be found next to the sundial at the back of the old chapel.
