The corn cob buildings featured on the cover of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are the towers of Marina City in Chicago. Marina City is a mixed residential/commercial location. 2010 census data reported 929 residents. Businesses include the House of Blues, Bin36, a bowling alley and a bank.
The album's title is derived from The Conet Project, which is also sampled on the track "Poor Places".

In 1962, the songwriters would see 17-year-old Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto walk by this bar and occasionally stop in to buy cigarettes for her mother, inspiring the quintessential song of both Bossa Nova and Elevator Music, The Girl from Ipanema.
The street would be renamed for the lyricist. The bar would be renamed for the song.
michael hutchence’s deathplace

On November 22nd, 1997, INXS singer Michael Hutchence was found dead, and nude, in Room 524 of the hotel. The coroner's office ruled the death as a suicide, though many believe his death was caused by autoerotic asphyxiation. The hotel permanently closed in March 2009.

Had the fish and chips here. Bland. Made me feel sick later. Should have tried the Hammy Sammy or Paul Bunyan burger as recommended by Danny Kroha. I did have a peanut butter and strawberry milkshake that was big and good, though.

In Jack White's neighborhood of SW Detroit. The music video's outside shooting was done in front of the hotel, but inside shooting was done elsewhere. Regarded as a home for those without a home.
