Back when this junior high was known as Mount Vernon Junior High School, Charles Bukowski went to school here (1933-1936).

It is now named Cochran Middle School in honor of lawyer to the famous, Johnnie Cochran, who also went to school here.

bukowki’s grave

Bukowski was buried here in 1994 after he died from leukemia. Contradictory even in death, Bukowski's gravestone is engraved with the phrase, "Don't Try." This was his final advice to people who would ask him how to write.

poe museum

Established in 1922, the Museum of Edgar Allan Poe commemorates the writer's time in the Richmond area. Built in 1740, the building where the museum is housed is the oldest original building in Richmond.

The museum holds one of the world's largest collections of original manuscripts, letters, first editions, memorabilia and personal belongings.

The museum is only blocks away from the sites of Poe's Richmond homes and place of employment, the Southern Literary Messenger. In fact, much of the brick work in the garden area is done with bricks from the former building that housed the Messenger.
