On July 11, 2001, the Dutch singer/pianist/painter/actor/celebrity Herman Brood committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. He was 54 years old.

Brood had success as a rock singer and performer in the Netherlands in the late 70's and 80's. He had re-recorded his domestic hit, Saturday Night, for the English speaking market, and the song made it to #35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Brood had struggled publicly with drug and alcohol addiction, and he had grown despondent over the failure of his treatment and continuing medical problems. His suicide caused a shockwave through the Dutch arts scene.

Before his cremation, Brood's casket was driven from the Hilton hotel to Paradiso (a music venue converted from an old church), where the streets were lined with thousands of spectators.

A beloved stalwart dive bar in the increasingly yuppified Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis, the CC Club was the inspiration for The Replacements song "Here Comes a Regular" off their 1985 album Tim.

The Replacements, Hüsker Dü, Soul Asylum (and pretty much every other Twin Cities band) used to hang out here regularly- the record store Oar Folkjokeopus, which is now Treehouse Records, is across the street.

It's a good place to go when you've worked up "a mean, mean thirst after a hard day of nothin' much at all."

From kindergarten to 8th grade, Bruce Springsteen attended school here (1954 to 1963). Later, the Boss would recollect being at odds with the structure of Catholic school, but having it lead to a "very active spiritual life." Traces of Irish-Catholic hymns can be heard in some of his work.

The Boss came back to the school to play a benefit acoustic show in the gymnasium on Nov. 8, 1996, and only Freehold residents were allowed to purchase tickets.

Doug and Adele Springsteen moved Bruce and his sister, Ginny, here around 1955. The Springsteens lived on the left side of the duplex for about eight years. It was here that Springsteen saw Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. A week later, he rented his first guitar from Freehold Music Center on Main Street.

In 1984, Springsteen did a photo shoot here that included a shot of him leaning next to a tree. It appeared in the Born in the U.S.A. liner notes.

This address is where Bruce Springsteen first lived until he was six years old. The house was torn down to make room for a parking lot for the St. Rose of Lima church.

The Springsteen (surname is from Dutch, meaning "jump stone") family was Roman Catholic and attended the church next door- St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
