After seeking an unorthodox cancer treatment in Germany for eight months, Bob Marley was returning to Jamaica when his flight stopped in Miami.

He was taken to the hospital for immediate medical attention. He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami (now University of Miami Hospital) on the morning of May 11, 1981, at the age of 36. The cancer had spread to his lungs and brain.

His final words to his son Ziggy were:
"Money can't buy life".

In 2008, the small hamlet of Banatski Sokolac in northeastern Serbia dedicated a statue to Bob Marley.

"We are honoured to announce that the first monument in Europe of the reggae legend Bob Marley will be erected in Banatski Sokolac," said the Internet site of the Rock Village festival.

The dedicators continued the August 23, 2008 statement by stating:
"Our village thus enters into history and supporters and all those who respect this 'liberty fighter armed with a guitar' can take part in the unveiling ceremony."

Formerly known as the Stanley Theater, the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts was constructed in 1927 and restored in 1987. The 2,800 seat theater was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1986.

Bob Marley played his last live concert here on September 23, 1980, before his death in 1981.

Prince kicked off his Controversy Tour in 1981 at the Stanley.
