Now known as iO Chicago, the group formerly known as the Improv Olympic Theatre was founded by Charna Halpern and Del Close in 1981. The style of iO is longer form improv, and the group has trained over 5,000 people. Some of the more recognized graduates include Chris Farley, Tina Fey and Mike Myers.

Halpern and Close co-wrote the book Truth in Comedy, The Manual for Improvisation.

There is a west coast affiliate of the same organization called iO West in Los Angeles.

diederich college of communication

Chris Farley graduated from Marquette University with degrees in communications and theater in 1986. Farley's character, Tommy, also graduates from Marquette University at the beginning of the 1995 film Tommy Boy.

The Diederich College of Communication offers a scholarship for a recipient who demonstrates "use of creativity and humor in a positive manner."

the ark improv theatre

This location (now a laundromat) used to be the home of the Ark Improv Theatre from 1984 to 1989.

Chris Farley honed his skills at this theater, as did Joan Cusack and Bonnie Hunt.

The Ark Repertory Theatre was founded by Dennis Kearn in 1981. The Ark Improv group performed at the Dragonwood Pub for one year, moved to the Club De Wash in the Washington Hotel (now burned down), before settling at this address for five years.

Chris Farley worked here with his father after graduating from Marquette University in 1986 with degrees in communications and theater.

He began performing regularly at the Ark Improv Theatre in Madison, and then went on to Improv Olympic and Second City in Chicago, before being discovered by Lorne Michaels of SNL.

edgewood high school of the sacred heart

Sponsored since its inception by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, WI, Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic high school whose mission is to educate the whole student for a life of learning, service and personal responsibility through a rigorous academic curriculum embracing the Sinsinawa Dominican values of Truth, Compassion, Justice, Partnership and Community.

The SNL member and comedic actor went to school and graduated from here. During one homecoming at Edgewood, Farley became famous for his prank of releasing 3 pigs into the school, numbered 1, 2, and 4. The search for pig number three lasted weeks.

American artist Georgia O'Keefe also went to school here as a boarder, when the facility was named Sacred Heart Academy, from 1901 to 1902.
