audobon ballroom
from malcolm x posted in history by donkeyoti
After Malcolm X left the Nation of Islam in 1964, he formed the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU). The group held weekly meetings at the Audubon Ballroom until February 21, 1965, when Malcolm X was assassinated at this location by Nation of Islam member Talmadge Hayer (as well as two other accused shooters).
Since then, the ballroom and property was purchased by Columbia University and converted into a public/private biotech research park. Through a series of protests, the original façade was maintained and converted to the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center.

On May 19, 1925, Malcolm Little was born to Earl and Louise Little. This location is where the future civil rights speaker known as Malcolm X would spend his first few years.
The actual home at the corner of 34th and Pinkey St was torn down in 1965, before the owner knew of the historical significance. Since then, six adjacent lots have been purchased and a park has been established by the Malcolm X Foundation.

When the Dude finds himself face-to-face with the pornographer Jackie Treehorn, it's at this location.
The home, also known as the Sheats-Goldstein House, was designed and built from 1961-1963 by American architect John Lautner. Located in the hills of the Beverly Crest neighborhood, the home's use of the Organic Architecture style was built into the sandstone cliffs and meant to evoke a cave-like dwelling.
The home has appeared in the films The Big Lebowski (1998), Bandits (2001), and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003).

Located three blocks from the beach in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, the Dude's cottage is one of a series of six on a quarter-acre lot that were constructed in 1928.
When The Big Lebowski came out in 1998, the area was much seedier (read: affordable) than it is today. The cottages were listed on the market in 2011 for $2,295,000.

From an Elvis plaque outside the courthouse:
"In 1946, Tupelo radio station WELO broadcast weekly music jamborees from the Courthouse. Mississippi Slim, who had his own show on WELO, arranged for Elvis to perform at the jamboree. Elvis' dream was to become as famous as Mississippi Slim and to have his own radio show some day."
