Many of the picturesque rolling countryside and rural farms in the film Promised Land were along Slate Lick Road, about 40 miles NE of Pittsburgh in Armstrong County.

Adkins recalls, “In looking for stunning pastoral farmlands, I remembered Slate Lick Road from scouting other films. When Gus flew into town, I picked him up at the airport and we went out to the Worthington/Slate Lick area, driving along that distinctive road.”

“I had never been there before,” notes the director. “When John drove me around the country area outside Pittsburgh, it seemed perfect.”

“That was it,” says Adkins. “Our movie was coming to the region, which became as big a star of PROMISED LAND as anyone else.”

The west Pennsylvania town of Avonmore had its main thoroughfare dressed to represent the fictional town of McKinley, PA in the 2012 film Promised Land. Many filming locations were located in the town of Avonmore and the surrounding area.

The town of Los Cerrillos (or just Cerrillos if you're a local) was a filming location for the 1988 film Young Guns. Standing in for Lincoln, NM, the town of Los Cerrillos was a mining boom town in the late 19th century. Today, the Cerrillos Turquoise Mining Museum contains many mining and Old West artifacts, as well as information on Young Guns. Many scenes from the film were shot in and around Cerrillos, including the peyote-eating scene.
