from larry clark, harmony korine, kids posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery

Larry Clark was sitting at the fountain in Washington Square Park watching and talking to skaters (this would have been in the early 90s) and a kid approached him and started talking movies. This kid (Harmony Korine) impressed him with his knowledge of film, and a year later, when Clark had the idea for what would become Kids, he got in touch with Korine about a screenplay for the movie. According to Clark, Korine knocked out the script in three weeks.

westerburg high school (exterior)

from heathers posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery

Heathers is one of the rare movies from the '80s that will probably never be granted a remake, which is fine because it's really not as good as you might remember. As dark as it is, the original idea for the ending was even darker with Veronica killing J.D. and then blowing herself up.

The climax outside of Westerburg High School was shot on the steps of John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica. The name of the school, in spite of the misspelling, was reportedly a nod to Winona Ryder's favorite band The Replacements.

farmer john murals

from zabriskie point, carrie (1976) posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery

In 1957, the Clougherty meat-packing company hired Les Grimes to paint a farmland mural on side of their plant just south of downtown Los Angeles in Vernon. Grimes died in 1968 after falling from a scaffold while painting and Arno Jordan completed the murals that span several blocks. The deteriorating murals were later touched up by muralist Philip Slagter and his crew. Say what you will about cavorting happy pigs in an idyllic country setting on the side of a slaughterhouse in industrial California.

The Farmer John murals make an appearance in Antonioni's Zabriskie Point and Brian De Palma's Carrie.
