the casbah
from the beatles posted in music by elvis_crabs
Opened on August 29, 1959 by Mona Best, mother of original Beatles drummer Pete Best, the Casbah Coffee Club was located in the cellar of the Best's family home. It was a member's only club for her sons and her friends to meet up and listen to music.
The Quarrymen (John Lennon and Paul McCartney's band before the Beatles) went to the club to arrange a performance there. Mona Best agreed, but said she needed to finish painting the club. All of the Quarrymen grabbed some brushes and started painting, including spiders, dragons, rainbows and stars.
The paintings still exist, and the basement is a Grade II listed building with a blue plaque (by English Heritage) and is open to the public for tours. It also contains 1960’s musical equipment, amplifiers and original chairs.
