rendezvous ballroom
from dick dale, surf music, big band posted in music by pete_nice
Built in 1928, the Rendezvous Ballroom was constructed on the Balboa peninsula in Orange County, CA.
Capitalizing on the popularity of swing and big band music, the ballroom featured numerous performers of that era: Artie Shaw, Ozzie Nelson, Benny Goodman, Guy Lombardo, Bob Crosby, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton, and more.
In the early '60, Dick Dale was playing at an ice cream parlor in the area. He added members of a backing band to form the Del-Tones, and he played his first gig at the Rendezvous on July 1, 1961. Only 17 people showed up, most of them his surfer friends.
But Dale continued to play and within four months, thousands of people were attending nightly to see the band perform and dance "The Surfer Stomp." Several other bands formed as a result of these shows, and surf rock was born.
The Rendezvous Ballroom burnt down in 1966 (coincidentally, a band called the Cinderman played the night before). In 1986, the O.C. Historical Commission dedicated a plaque here.

This strip mall features a filming location for the 2007 film Superbad. This liquor store is where "McLovin" tries to buy booze, gets punched out by a robber, and meets the two cops (Bill Hader and Seth Rogen).
In the parking lot, Seth (Jonah Hill) gets run over by a sketchy Francis (Joe Lo Truglio).

The tear-jerker/Bette Midler movie soundtrack vehicle Beaches (1988) filmed several scenes at the rental cottages of Crystal Cove State Park (specifically, it was Cottage #13).
The 45 different cottages were built in the 1930s and recently renovated for rentals. A restaurant, the Beachcomber Café, is located in one of the converted cottages and looks out on the ocean.
dicksboro apartments
from tim and eric awesome show, great job! posted in television by ratsnamgod
For the David Liebe Hart song "Father and Son".
"My son Chip passed away. He was stolen out of a box at the Dicksboros Apartment. Now I got a new boy, and, this is the new one that replaced 'Chip the Black Boy' that was stolen."
According to his song "Dicksboro", the structure was built in 1920 and Sidney Poitier stayed here. So did Julie Andrews.
The apartment building has received poor reviews on apartmentratings.com and is listed on the bedbudregisty.
