kramler building

from the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay posted in literature by speedy_dee

From the novel:

"The offices of the Empire Novelty Company, Inc., were on the fourth floor of the Kramler Building, in a hard-luck stretch of Twenty-fifth Street near Madison Square. A fourteen-story office block faced with stone the color of a stained shirt collar, its windows bearded with soot, ornamented with a smattering of modern zigzags, the Kramler stood out as a lone gesture of commercial hopefulness..."

The Empire State Building is featured several times in the novel The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon.

The entire staff of Empire Comics moves into the 25th floor of the building when The Escapist becomes a hit, and Sam Clay stands watch against Nazi air attacks from the extant dirigible deck on the 86th floor (among several other scenes).

latin quarter (former)

from the golden age of hip hop posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

This is the former Times Square location of the Latin Quarter. The nightclub dates back to 1942, but the few short years from '85 to '89 was when it earned its status as a legendary hip hop hotspot.

EPMD, the Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, X Clan and many others all got their start playing shows at the LQ during hip hop's golden age. MC Hammer was booed here during his first New York appearance, but then again even Public Enemy was told to get off the stage by Melle Mel when they played the LQ to promote Yo! Bum Rush the Show.

The Latin Quarter is mentioned in songs by PE, Ice T, BDP and 3rd Bass among others. The building was torn down in 1989. The club reopened in 2003 on the East Side, and that location is notorious for being the place where Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg.

171a studios (former)

from beastie boys, bad brains posted in music by malco23

Originally started as a place for North Carolina punk band Th' Cigaretz to live and rehearse. Guitarist/vocalist Jerry Williams and drummer Scott Jarvis eventually were the only ones still living there when they transformed the squat into a club/rehearsal space/recording studio. The Bad Brains recorded their first album here, which was eventually released by ROIR cassettes. The people who pass through those doors are legend. Days never to be seen again on this orb.

In the picture, you can see Jerry Williams RIP on the left, in the middle of the doorway, blonde hair.
