Completed on November 15, 1941, Fort Campbell is located on the Kentucky-Tennessee border. It's the home of the the 101st Airborne Division and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
Jimi Hendrix was stationed at Fort Campbell after he joined the Army to avoid going to jail for riding in stolen cars. He was recommended for discharge in May of 1962 after only a year of service for "behavior problems" and "requires excessive supervision," among other things.
At Fort Campbell, Hendrix met some other musicians that would be instrumental in his formation as an artist and who would serve as close friends for the rest of his short life.

Jimi Hendrix went to elementary school here. A shy and sensitive kid, he used to drag a broom handle around and pretend it was a guitar. The school psychologist tried unsuccessfully to raise funds to buy Jimi a real guitar fearing that without it might result in "psychological damage."
