energy park studios

from mst3k:the movie, a simple plan posted in movies by pete_nice

Located in the scenic industrial Energy Park area of St. Paul, Energy Park Studios was a filming studio that saw a number of films created within its walls: Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), Jingle All the Way (1996), A Simple Plan (1998), Grumpier Old Men (1995), Little Big League (1994) and more.

In 1996, locally-produced cult TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 shot their theatrical release at Energy Park studios.

The number of 90's films shot in the area was partially due to concerted efforts made by then Gov. Jesse "The Mind" Ventura (former professional wrestler/Navy Seal/star of the film Predator) to attract the film industry to work in the state.

Energy Park Studios is currently closed and the building has been converted to the Hmong College Prep Academy.

monona terrace

from otis redding, frank lloyd wright posted in music by pete_nice

Overlooking Lake Monona in Madison, WI is the Monona Terrace. Originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (a Wisconsin native), it was rejected by a single vote in 1938. Wright continued to alter and refine his plan for the terrace until he died in 1959.

Plans for the terrace were resurrected in 1990, and the project was completed in 1997.

On top of the terrace is a memorial to the soul singer Otis Redding. On December 10, 1967, Redding was flying to Madison with his Stax Records backing group, the Bar-Kays, when their plane crashed into the icy waters of Lake Monona. Except for one member of the Bar-Kays, everyone aboard the plane died.

The crash came three days after Redding had recorded "Sitting On the Dock of the Bay," which would become his first #1 hit song. He was 26 years old.

morrison apartments

from the doors, jim morrison posted in music by pete_nice

Jim Morrison lived on the roof of this building in the summer of 1965. He would eat meals at his friend's (Dennis Jacob) apartment, stare at the ocean while tripping on LSD, and slept outside on the roof.

The current owner of this building is obviously aware of the legacy, because the name of the building is the Morrison Apartments.
