patty hearst safehouse
from patty hearst kidnapping posted in history by pete_nice
Patty Hearst, the granddaughter of publishing magnate (and Citizen Kane inspiration) William Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped from her Berkeley apartment by the Symbionese Liberation Army on February 4, 1974.
The Symbionese Liberation Army, or SLA, drew their name from the word "symbiosis", and based their manifesto on leftist urban guerilla propaganda.
Hearst participated in a bank robbery at 1450 Noriega Street in San Francisco on April 15, 1974. She was photographed wielding an M1 carbine at the Sunset District branch of the Hibernia Bank.
Patty was shuttled between many safe houses by the SLA until her eventual arrest in September of 1975. This house in Haight-Ashbury is one of them.

Although it closed in 1997 to make way for the California State University-Channel Islands campus, the Camarillo State Mental Hospital had been open since 1932.
Due to its proximity to Los Angeles, many celebrity types used the facility as a detox center. Charlie Parker wrote Relaxin' at Camarillo while recovering from heroin addiction here. Frank Zappa has a song called "Camarillo Brillo".
The opening scene of Bottle Rocket takes place on the Camarillo State Mental Hospital grounds.
kew gardens parking lot
from superheroes (documentary) posted in movies by pete_nice
The parking lot for the Kew Gardens station became infamous for the location of the Kitty Genovese incident, where a young woman was assaulted and murdered in a populated neighborhood.
The incident became a rallying cry against social apathy, and articles were written about the "38 witnesses who did nothing." Details of the case do not support this scenario, but the case still motivates. It is referenced several times in the HBO documentary on real-life superheroes called Superheroes.

from can’t buy me love posted in movies by pete_nice
The Pima Air and Space Museum is the largest non-government funded aviation museum in the world. Adjacent to the museum is the massive airplane graveyard known as the Aerospace Maintenance & Regeneration Center (AMARC) which was featured in the 80s teen movie Can't Buy Me Love (1987).
The "Boneyard" was also featured in the films My Science Project (1985), The Wraith (1986), and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (2009). Some of the planes from Top Gun are supposedly stored here.
