total access recording studio

from hüsker dü, minutemen, sublime, black flag posted in music by pete_nice

Total Access Recording Studio in Redondo Beach has been open since December 1980. The lists of bands who have recorded here is too extensive to list, but here's one interesting anecdote.

After being signed as the first non-West Coast band on the SST Records label (Black Flag, the Minutemen), Hüsker Dü went to record Zen Arcade at Total Access with producer Spot in October of 1983. The band recorded 25 songs, and all but two were on the first take. The recording and the mixing of Zen Arcade took 85 hours total and cost $3,200.

the rossmor building

from hüsker dü, husker du posted in music by pete_nice

After Warehouse: Songs and Stories came out in 1987, Hüsker Dü spent some time practicing and building songs in the Rossmor Building. A former shoe factory that takes up an entire city block, the Rossmor's empty spaces and lofts were home to artists, musicians, and the like in the late 80's. Grant Hart (drummer) was living here at the time. A few recordings have survived that period, but Hüsker Dü called it quits before releasing another album.

Today, the Rossmor is a collection of upscale condominiums- surprise!

ron’s randolph inn (former)

from hüsker dü, husker du posted in music by pete_nice

In March of 1979, Hüsker Dü played their first public performance at Ron's Randolph Inn. Although there is no longer a 1217 building at this address, the 1219 building contains the one-story brick building that used to be Ron's.

As Bob Mould recalled:
"I am 99% certain it's the one story building next to the salon. The front windows you see were 'the back of the stage.' When one entered the front door, they were essentially to my immediate left (stage left). The stage was maybe 12 inches high, with a small wrought iron rail — think handrail for a stairway entrance to a suburban house — on stage left. Don't ask me how I remember all of this."

janis joplin died here

from janis joplin posted in music by pete_nice

Janis Joplin died at the Landmark Motor Hotel (currently known as the Highland Gardens) on Sunday, October 4, 1970 of a heroin overdose.

Earlier the previous evening, Joplin had been at Barney's Beanery with some cohorts. Joplin was apparently bummed out that she had been stood up by her friends recently, and had been given a particularly potent batch of heroin.

When Joplin failed to show up at her recording session at Sunset Sound Records on October 4, her producer Paul Rothchild visited the Landmark Motor Hotel. He discovered Joplin's body in her room (#105). She was 27 years old.

jim morrison’s rothdell residence

from jim morrison, the doors posted in music by pete_nice

The song "Love Street" was actually referring to Rothdell Trail and the many hippies and flower children that would mill about it back in the sixites. Jim Morrison and his girlfriend, Pam Courson, lived at this address in a brown wooden house, visiting the nearby Laurel Canyon Store often.
