from clock of the long now, jeff bezos posted in technology by pete_nice
"I want to build a clock that ticks once a year. The century hand advances once every 100 years, and the cuckoo comes out on the millennium. I want the cuckoo to come out every millennium for the next 10,000 years."- Danny Hill, The Long Now Foundation
The Long Now Foundation purchased the 180 acres of Mt. Washington in Eastern Nevada, just off of Great Basin National Park, in 1999. The group's intention is to complete a large scale project that encourages long-term thinking.
A prototype of the project is currently being constructed in a mountain on Jeff Bezo's Corn Ranch in West Texas.
brexit mural
from banksy posted in art and design by nevereatshreddedwheat
Banksy's critique of Brexit appeared on the side of a Castle Amusements building in Dover, next to the ferry port connecting the UK with France, in early May 2017. The family that owns the building plans to attempt to sell the piece, although that same family was thwarted by a judge in 2015 after trying to sell an earlier Banksy piece. Who knows how long this one will stick around.
gimghoul castle
from secret societies posted in history by pete_nice
Built in 1924 out of 1300 tons of rough stone, this castle is the home of the University of North Carolina secret society known as the Order of Gimghoul.
The Gimghoul Castle (also known as the Hippol Castle) has an origin tale stemming from an 18-year old student, Peter Dromgoole, supposedly killed in a duel over a fair maiden at the location. His blood is said to have stained a rock that guards the castle's entrance to this day. There are other versions of this story that are equally melodramatic.
the highway on the ok computer album cover
from radiohead posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat
All credit to reddit for this where a sleuth worked out the location of the highway intersection on the cover of Radiohead's OK Computer using the expanded artwork from the 20th anniversary re-release, a forum for people really into highways and surprisingly not an obsessive amount of time. It's I-84 and I-91 in Hartford, CT if you want to have a visit.
