From 1965 to 1972, this location was the headquarters to the "San Francisco Sound" called The Matrix. Several blues and psychedelic bands played the venue in the 60s, and Jefferson Airplane was the house band from 1965 to 1966.
According to the movie Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson, HST would frequent The Matrix and had a crush on J.A. lead singer, Grace Slick.
A memorable scene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas recreates a flashback from the bathroom of The Matrix with Johnny Depp and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Many of the high-tech interiors of the Enterprise in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel Star Trek Into Darkness were filmed at the National Ignition Facility, part of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory near San Francisco.
This was the first time a movie had been allowed to shoot at the NIF. The research facility is home to the world's largest and most energetic laser system, which they are using to attempt nuclear fusion. Like the Enterprise, it's also fueled by the hydrogen isotope deuterium. Way cooler than the Anheuser-Busch brewery used for the first movie.

The museum has moved from its Cliff House location that NMH visited to its current location in the Fisherman’s Wharf district.
