On October 4, 2011, Jeff Magnum made an impromptu appearance at the Occupy Wall Street protest at Zuccotti Park, playing several Neutral Milk Hotel songs for a cheering and singing audience.

The park is privately owned by Brookfield Properties and is named after company chairman, John Zuccotti. The park used to be named Liberty Plaza Park.

Comedy Central's The Colbert Report debuted on October 17, 2005. In the show, the eponymous character, Stephen Colbert, is a self-aggrandizing buffoon who doesn't let facts get in the way of his "truthiness." The concept initially pitched was simply one line: "our version of The O'Reilly Factor with Stephen Colbert."

Since the show's debut, Colbert's persistent quest to feed his character's ego has succeeded in many different fields. Among the numerous honors, he now has a spider named after him (Aptostichus stephencolberti), a treadmill on the International Space Station is called the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT), and an OHL team mascot (Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle).

Colbert's own titles have grown with an honorary doctorate in fine arts from Knox College and a knighthood from Queen Noor of Jordan. Current production title: Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert D.F.A. The show currently tapes at NEP Studio 54 at this address.

The first The Daily Show aired on July 21, 1996. Created by Lizz Winstead and Madeleine Smithberg for Comedy Central, the original host was Craig Kilborn. The show's initial focus was focusing on human-interest stories and generally mocking hapless people.

In January 1999, Jon Stewart took over as host, and the show's focus shifted to satirical news. With the addition of key writers recruited from The Onion, The Daily Show became adept at skewering politics and traditional media with razor-sharp satire. Since 2000, The Daily Show has received 16 Emmys and 2 Peabodys. While the show's mantra insists that they provide "entertainment through fake news", the dedication to integrity (even if comedically) has given the show an air of credibility that few serious television journalistic outlets have replicated.

In 1977, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager transformed a theater in midtown Manhattan into a nightclub. The club was called Studio 54, and the rise of disco music, use of drugs, and open nature of sexuality at the location helped it become the preeminent den of iniquity that it is so fondly remembered for.

It was a natural meeting place for artists and celebrities, and the interior was constantly changed to match the theatrical setting. The doorman was instructed to "cast a play" among the people clamoring to get in so that "nobodies" could party with celebrities.

The club closed in 1980, with Schrager and Rubell sentenced to 13 months in prison for tax evasion. There is now a bar called Studio 54 in Las Vegas, where everything is fresh and original.
