john and peter’s place

from ween posted in music by pete_nice

A New Hope live-music/dive-bar institution since 1972, J & P's has given many local bands a chance to practice in front of an audience.

Hometown heroes Ween have a photo print hanging at John and Peter's, the same print of Ringing Rocks that was in the liner notes of Chocolate and Cheese. The photo was taken by Danny Clinch, an Annie Leibovitz protégé.

Ween used to play the occasional surprise show at this bar.

Reiner Design Consultants was the design company that created the cover for Ween's Chocolate and Cheese.

Originally envisioned by Gene Ween (Aaron Freeman), the cover was a take-off of old Ohio Players album covers, like Honey. Dean Ween thought that the belt should look like a boxing belt from the 70's (and he now claims to hold the belt).

graphic sound studio

The go-to studio for multiple tracks (and albums) for Ween, Graphic Sound Studio is a studio run by Greg and Patricia Frey in Ringoes (East Amwell), New Jersey.

"Baby Bitch" (track #7 on Chocolate and Cheese) was recorded at Graphic Sound in a frenzy. Dean and Gene were going through a prolific song-writing phase, and usual drummer Claude Coleman was on tour. Pat Frey filled in on drums for "Baby Bitch" and the song was done by the second take.

Ween's 2003 live album All Request Live for Chocodog Records was also done at Graphic Sound Studio, as well as numerous additional tracks and song portions throughout the years.

new hope-lambertville toll supported bridge

from ween posted in music by pete_nice

New Hope, PA is the birthplace of Ween. Both Dean (Mickey Melchiondo) and Gene (Aaron Freeman) Ween grew up in it's brownish breeding ground. New Hope is a scenic river town, with the Delaware River gently separating it and Lambertville, NJ.

During the weekends, New Hope becomes a tourist destination where people ride along the river on horse carriages, mule-barge rides on the canal, ferry boats and bicycles- you name it. Somewhat idyllic, but...

(Dean Ween:) "...when you grow up in a town like that, you become fucking bitter. It's like people who live at the beach year-round, and all the summer tourists come in."

"So I was with Guy (Heller, of the Moistboyz) one day and we're walking across the bridge and we're seeing all this shit: people eating ice cream and it's so ugly. Guy's like, "Man, I just wish I had a fuckin' megaphone. I'd like to fuckin' make an announcement and say, 'AIDS!, HIV! Cancer!'...so I turned it into a song."

"The HIV Song" is #14 on Chocolate and Cheese.
