freddie mercury lived (and died) here
from freddie mercury, queen posted in music by pete_nice
Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen, lived in this $6 million until his death (at this location) of AIDS-related pneumonia on November 24, 1991. Mercury did not announce to the world that he had AIDS until 24 hours prior to his death.
The very worldly Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946. The Bulsara family moved to India in 1947. Mercury began piano lessons and music theory as he attended boarding school in Panchgani, just outside Bombay. The family moved to England in 1963.
The Mercury house on Logan still stands today. His former girlfriend, Mary Austen, was very close to Mercury and inherited the house where she still lives today.

In the music video for "It's Tricky", Run-DMC bust up Penn and Teller's three-card Monte scam in front of downtown L.A.'s Rialto Theater, although the joke is on them when Penn and Teller impersonate the group on stage in Japan six months later in front of a crowd who evidently can't tell the difference.
The historic Rialto on Broadway opened in 1917 and closed in 1988. The rumor in fall of 2012 is that Urban Outfitters is interested in the building for a retail store.

On Interstate 10 near the west Texas town of Sierra Blanca, the border patrol has set up a quasi-legal checkpoint with drug-sniffing dogs that has been a boon to the local economy. Lawyers in the area specialize in defending drug arrests.
Among the celebrities to have been arrested in Sierra Blanca for marijuana possession include Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Fiona Apple, and the first guy to hack the iPhone and the PS3, "geohot" (aka George Hotz).

From an Elvis plaque outside the courthouse:
"In 1946, Tupelo radio station WELO broadcast weekly music jamborees from the Courthouse. Mississippi Slim, who had his own show on WELO, arranged for Elvis to perform at the jamboree. Elvis' dream was to become as famous as Mississippi Slim and to have his own radio show some day."
shake rag (or shakerag)
from elvis presley posted in music by elvis_crabs
Elvis and his family lived near this predominantly African-American neighborhood in Tupelo. The Mississippi Blues Commission put a sign here in 2003 that reads as follows:
"Shake Rag, located east of the old M&O (later GM&O) railway tracks and extending northward from Main Street, was one of several historic African American communities in Tupelo. By the 1920s blues and jazz flowed freely from performers at Shake Rag restaurants, cafes, and house parties, and later from jukeboxes, while the sounds of gospel music filled the churches. The neighborhood was leveled and its residents relocated during an urban renewal project initiated in the late 1960s."
