Janis Joplin, her sister Laura, and her mother were all member of the First Christian Church when it was at this location in the early 1950s. Janis was baptized here in 1950 by Rev. John M Hughes, and she sang in the youth choir.

Many years later, a painting by Janis of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene was found in the church closet and is now on display at the Museum of the Gulf Coast.

The First Christina Church moved to 5856 9th Ave, and has an autographed picture of Janis in the choir on display.
