The Cité de Carcassonne is a medieval citadel located in the French city of Carcassonne, on a hill on the overlooking the River Aude. The town has about 2,500 years of history and has seen the Romans, Visigoths, Saracens and Crusaders.
In the early years of the 13th century, a sect of Christians called the Cathars had risen to prominence in the area. The Cathars believed in a dualistic theism, where the good god (God) created all that was spiritual and a bad god (Satan) created all that was material.
The Cathars managed to upset the Roman Catholic establishment to the point where they fled to and were laid siege upon in this fortress. For a year, local Catholics and Cathars fought against the siege of Arnaud-Amaury.
When asked how to distinguish Cathars from Catholics at the besieged town of Béziers, Arnaud replied "Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius" or "Slay them. God knows his own." This statement is often remembered as "Kill them all and let God sort them out."
where blackbeard was killed
from pirates, blackbeard posted in history by pete_nice
In 1718, the most famous pirate of the day, Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, was chased into a sandbar at Oracoke Inlet by Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy. Blackbeard's ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, was immobile in the sand, so he boarded Maynard's ship with his crew to overtake them.
The Royal Navy crew had many sailors hiding below deck and when the pirates boarded, Blackbeard was shot several times at close range.
His head was removed and hung at the front of the ship as a warning to other pirates, as well as to collect the bounty. Legend has it that Blackbeard's body swam around the ship three times.
Today, the Underwater Archaeology Branch of the U.S. Coast Guard is excavating the shipwreck, and it has collected 280,000 artifacts including cannons and the anchor of the Revenge.
first chipotle restaurant

After Steve Ells graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, he worked as a line cook at Stars in San Francisco. He noticed the popularity of taquerías and San Francisco burritos in the area, and in 1993 he went to Denver to open the first Chipotle burrito restaurant near the University of Denver campus.
His goal was to sell 107 burritos a day to make enough money to open a fine dining establishment. Instead, the new restaurant began selling 1,000 burritos a day. Chipotle quickly expanded, and the concept of fast casual dining has been introduced to mainstream America: food of a higher quality than fast food, but does include table service.
Today, Chipotle has over 1500 locations and a market capitalization (as of this writing) of $15.23 billion.
