Metropolis, Illinois doesn't really have anything to do with the Superman canon. This town of less than 7,000 people shares the same name with what was a stand-in for New York in the comic books. For that reason it was declared the "Hometown of Superman" by DC Comics in the 1972. Apparently, in the '70s, Metropolis had plans to build an "Amazing World of Superman" theme park, but that decade's malaise must have forced them to reconsider.
Every summer the city holds a Superman Celebration, and don't miss (how could you) the 15-foot tall, bronze Superman statue in Superman Square.
