woodrow wilson junior high

Janis Joplin attended the Woodrow Wilson Junior High school for grades 7-9. The actual building was badly damaged in 2005 when Hurricane Rita struck. One wing was devastated and was closed off to students for safety reasons.
In 2006, it was demolished to make way for the Carl A. Parker Multipurpose Center on the Lamar State College-Port Arthur campus.

Janis Joplin went to grades 1-6 at this elementary school. In 1950, she joined the Bluebirds- a junior Camp Fire Girls club.

The Joplins moved into this home on August 19, 1947. They purchased this property when it was 3130 Lombardy in Griffing Park, but the address was changed in 1982 when Grffing Park consolidated with Port Arthur. Today, there is a sign posted by the Texas Historical Commission outside the home.

On January 19, 1943, Janis Lyn Joplin was born here to Seth Joplin, an engineer at Texaco, and Dorothy Joplin, a registrar at a business college. Janis was their first child and the family lived on Procter St. for the first few years of Janis's life.
The St. Mary's Hospital in Port Arthur, TX is not to be confused with the St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, MN where Bob Dylan was born on May 24, 1941.

Although the original home has since been torn down, the Joplin's were living at this address when Janis was born on January 19, 1943. For the diehard fans, the bricks of this home are for purchase at the Museum of the Gulf Coast.
