“Dr. Marvin, guess what? Ahoy,
I sail, I’m a sailor, I sail!”

The 1991 comedy film What About Bob? follows the several-phobia suffering Bob Wiley (Bill Murray) as he latches onto his psychiatrist Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss) and the Marvin family.

Written by Tom Schulman (Dead Poets Society, Medicine Man) and directed by Frank Oz (Little Shop of Horrors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the voice of Yoda and Fozzie Bear), the film has been remade several times including the Tamil film Thenali (2000) and the Hindi film Deewana Mastana (1997).

The following list provides the locations from this classic comedy film.

*Spoilers follow here

  • The Marvins’ summer home– Located on Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, VA, this home still stands in nearly the same condition.
  • Downtown Lake Winnipesaukee– Although there really is a lake named Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, there is no town of Lake Winnipesaukee.  The old storefronts of Moneta, VA were dressed up for the film shoot.
  • Elks National Home– This retirement community in Bedford, VA served as the filming location for the mental institution where Dr. Marvin tries to shelve Bob.
  • First Christian Church of North Hollywood– The church where Bob marries Lily Marvin at the end of What About Bob?
