jesse hall

from stoner, john williams posted in literature by nevereatshreddedwheat

Stoner got up quietly, dressed in the dark, and went out of the room without awakening her. He walked the still, empty streets of Columbia until the first gray light began in the east; then he made his way to the University campus. He sat on the stone steps in front of Jesse Hall and watched the light from the east creep upon the great stone columns in the center of the quad. He thought of the fire that, before he was born, had gutted and ruined the old building; and he was distantly saddened by the view of what remained. When it was light he let himself into the hall and went to his office where he waited until his first class began.

Angelmaker, Nick Harkaway

From the novel:

"The offices of the Empire Novelty Company, Inc., were on the fourth floor of the Kramler Building, in a hard-luck stretch of Twenty-fifth Street near Madison Square. A fourteen-story office block faced with stone the color of a stained shirt collar, its windows bearded with soot, ornamented with a smattering of modern zigzags, the Kramler stood out as a lone gesture of commercial hopefulness..."

the matrix (former)

from hunter s. thompson, jefferson airplane posted in literature by pete_nice

From 1965 to 1972, this location was the headquarters to the "San Francisco Sound" called The Matrix. Several blues and psychedelic bands played the venue in the 60s, and Jefferson Airplane was the house band from 1965 to 1966.

According to the movie Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson, HST would frequent The Matrix and had a crush on J.A. lead singer, Grace Slick.

A memorable scene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas recreates a flashback from the bathroom of The Matrix with Johnny Depp and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
