At about 1:11 p.m. on November 23, 1963, Officer J.D. Tippit of the Dallas P.D. was driving slowly eastward on East 10th Street (about 100 feet past the intersection of 10th Street and Patton Avenue) when he saw a man who matched the description of the presidential assassin.
Tippit got out of his car after exchanging words with Lee Harvey Oswald through the window, and Oswald pulled out a handgun and shot him three times in the chest. Then Oswald then walked up to the fallen officer and shot him in the head. Tippit died at the scene.
Oswald fled the scene and ran into the nearby Texas Theatre without buying a ticket.
