Although many much of the exterior (and interior) filming for Downton Abbey were filmed at Highclere Castle and the village of Bampton, Ealing Studios was used for the servants' living quarters.

st. mary’s church in bampton

from downton abbey posted in television by pete_nice

Although the main exterior for the period drama Downton Abbey is Highclere Castle in Highclere Park, many of the village exterior shots (and church interiors) were filmed near The Church of St. Mary the Virgin (the parish church of Bampton in Oxfordshire).

The current structure was originally constructed in the 12th century, with the spire added in the mid-13th century, but there are records of a church being at this location as early as 1089.

Several walking scenes in the village have been shot near the church. The nearby library exterior has been used in a number of shots, including the arrival of the Matthew Crawley and his mother to the area.

If you look closely during the show, you can sometimes pick out the occasional tv antenna and double yellow lines on the road. If you don't have anything better to do, that is.

downton abbey

from downton abbey posted in television by pete_nice

The main filming exterior (and many interiors) for the period drama Downton Abbey is Highclere Castle. Set on a 1,000 acre estate in the county of Hampshire, Highclere Castle is an example of Jacobethan architecture and was largely rebuilt in this style by Sir Charles Barry from 1839 to 1842 (after he completed the Houses of Parliament).

To distinguish, Highclere Castle is the historical county seat of the Earl of Carnovan. Downton Abbey is the fictional home of the Earl and Countess of Grantham in the North Riding of Yorkshire.

future birthplace of james t. kirk

from star trek posted in television by pete_nice

Behind the old barber shop is a plaque that commemorates a fictional event 200 years from now. On March 22, 2228, Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise will be born in Riverside, IA. This was self-proclaimed by the city of Riverside, and good on them for showing the initiative. They were going to do a bronze bust of Kirk, but Paramount wanted $40,000.

The Riverside History Center has dedicated a room to Star Trek called The Voyage Home. Each year the community club puts on Trek Fest where Trekkies congregate. There is a sculpture in the park that has an eerie similarity (but legally dissimilar) to the Enterprise.
