In 1997, Zip2 moved their headquarters to this location. Zip2 was online directory founded by the Musk brothers, Elon and Kimbal.

The company merged with CitySearch in a $300 million deal in 1998. This gave Elon Musk the capital to begin his next project, the online banking company- X.com.

omelek island

Space Exploration Technologies Corp (or SpaceX) made the first successful privately funded, liquid-propelled orbital launch vehicle with Flight #4 of the Falcoln 1 rocket on September 28, 2008.

Omelek Island is close to the equator, where the Earth spins a little bit faster, giving the rocket an extra boost upon launch. The island is a part of a series of islands used to test the efficacy of the "Star Wars" missile defense system back in the 80s.

On February 28, 1953, Francis Crick, a researcher at Cambridge, walked into this popular campus watering hole. His announcement: Crick and James Watson had "discovered the secret of life."

Namely, the two had decoded the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA. Sixty years later, that discovery is still having massive ramifications.

thomas edison national historical park

Designated as the Edison Home National Historic Site on December 6, 1955, this location is now called Thomas Edison National Historical Park.

The park features two main buildings: the Laboratory complex featuring numerous inventions, films, and artifacts from Edison's inventing years there (starting in 1886), and the Glenmont Estate where Edison lived with his wife until he died in 1931.

At this location, Edison worked on making his original phonograph commercially viable, developed the kinetoscope and several other motion picture devices, and developed nickel-iron-alkaline storage batteries that powered early electric vehicles.

Also located at the park is Edison's Black Maria, one of the first motion picture studios.

The term "derrick" refers to the structure's resemblance to the type of gallows from which a hangman's noose hangs.

The derrick type of gallows in turn got its name from Thomas Derrick, an English executioner from the Elizabethan era who executed more than 3,000 people, including the guy who gave him the job, the Earl of Essex.
