from bugsy (1991) posted in movies by tacopolis
American mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel started the Las Vegas strip in 1946 by building the Flamingo Hotel and Casino. The hotel closed later that year, only to reopen in 1947.
On June 20, 1947, Bugsy was sitting in the living room of his girlfriend's house reading the Los Angeles Times. A car pulled into the driveway, and fired an M-1 carbine through the window. Bugsy was shot several times, including twice in the head.
farmer john murals
from zabriskie point, carrie (1976) posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery
In 1957, the Clougherty meat-packing company hired Les Grimes to paint a farmland mural on side of their plant just south of downtown Los Angeles in Vernon. Grimes died in 1968 after falling from a scaffold while painting and Arno Jordan completed the murals that span several blocks. The deteriorating murals were later touched up by muralist Philip Slagter and his crew. Say what you will about cavorting happy pigs in an idyllic country setting on the side of a slaughterhouse in industrial California.
The Farmer John murals make an appearance in Antonioni's Zabriskie Point and Brian De Palma's Carrie.
kew gardens parking lot
from superheroes (documentary) posted in movies by pete_nice
The parking lot for the Kew Gardens station became infamous for the location of the Kitty Genovese incident, where a young woman was assaulted and murdered in a populated neighborhood.
The incident became a rallying cry against social apathy, and articles were written about the "38 witnesses who did nothing." Details of the case do not support this scenario, but the case still motivates. It is referenced several times in the HBO documentary on real-life superheroes called Superheroes.

I always assumed it was a movie set, but this is the actual small church out in the California desert where the massacre at the Two Pines Wedding Chapel in Tarantino's Kill Bill was filmed.
the four aces
from swordfish, buffy the vampire slayer posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery
The Four Aces is a convincingly realistic (albeit dated to anyone driving by) movie set in the desert of Palmdale, California. Among other tv shows and movies, its Route 66 style diner, gas station, hotel and honky tonk bar have been used as a filming location for Swordfish, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lady Gaga's music video for "Telephone."
