charles bukowski’s birthplace
from charles bukowski posted in literature by prof_improbable
Born to an American soldier father and a German mother, Charles Bukowski started life at this location as Heinrich Karl Bukowski on August 16, 1920. Although his family left for America in 1923, Adernach still features the home with a plaque marking the site. There is a group trying to rent out the first floor of the home to make a Bukowski museum. The photo is Bukowski revisiting his birthplace.

Hunter S. Thompson transferred to this high school in September 1952.
He was accepted as a member of the Athenaeum Literary Association, a literary group at the school, and contributed a number of articles for them.
He was kicked out of this group in 1955 because of legal problems, and some biographers view this as the beginning of his resolve against social class hypocrisy.

Some esoteric trivia: near the end of Gravity's Rainbow Pynchon writes "Philip Marlowe will suffer a horrible migraine and reach by reflex for the pint of rye in his suit pocket, and feel homesick for the lacework balconies of the Bradbury Building." This is a reference to the 1969 James Garner movie Marlowe in which the detective's office was located in this Los Angeles landmark.
