janis joplin died here
from janis joplin posted in music by pete_nice
Janis Joplin died at the Landmark Motor Hotel (currently known as the Highland Gardens) on Sunday, October 4, 1970 of a heroin overdose.
Earlier the previous evening, Joplin had been at Barney's Beanery with some cohorts. Joplin was apparently bummed out that she had been stood up by her friends recently, and had been given a particularly potent batch of heroin.
When Joplin failed to show up at her recording session at Sunset Sound Records on October 4, her producer Paul Rothchild visited the Landmark Motor Hotel. He discovered Joplin's body in her room (#105). She was 27 years old.

Although it was set in New York, the interior of the Pandora Theatre in 1993's self-referential turd The Last Action Hero, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and some dumb kid, was Los Angeles's Orpheum Theatre on South Broadway. Exteriors were shot in New York City at the Empire Theatre on 42nd Street.

Immortalized in the song "Love Street" by the Doors, this is "the place where the creatures meet." Jim Morrison used to live with his girlfriend Pam near this store in the 60's, and they would meet up with the other musicians that lived in the area (Frank Zappa, David Crosby, Mama Cass, Joni Mitchell) to drink, hang out, and play music on the porch.
Jennifer Aniston used to work here as a cashier and in the deli.
the hollywood bowl

The largest natural amphitheater in the United States (seating capacity around 18,000), the Hollywood Bowl has seen quite a bit of action. The "bowl" portion refers to the concave hillside the amphitheater is carved into.
Initially surveyed in 1919, the bowl opened as "Daisy Dell" on July 11, 1922, using little more than a stage, wooden benches, and the natural surroundings.
In 1927, Frank Lloyd Wright designed an acoustic band shell that only lasted one season (it was deemed to avant-garde). So the next year he designed another one.
The physical nature of the Hollywood Bowl has increasingly changed over the years. More bands have performed (and movie scenes shot) here than can be listed. Some noteworthy events were the Beatles performances here in '64/'65 (released as The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl) and the July 5, 1968 Doors concert that became a film and live album (The Doors, Live at the Hollywood Bowl).
