Located in southeastern France, the ITER is the first large-scale attempt at nuclear fusion. To make a comparison, fusion is the combination of atoms (like what the sun does), instead of splitting an atom (which is nuclear fission).
With seven member entities contributing to the ambitious megaproject- including the European Union, India, Japan, People's Republic of China, Russia, South Korea and the United States- the project is scheduled to go online in 2019 with a price tag of around $50 billion U.S.
